On October 11, 2019, two BBC journalists found themselves in an unexpected situation at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Kenya. Anne Soy, a Senior Correspondent and Deputy Africa Editor, and her husband Newton Ndebu, a BBC journalist, were attending the ongoing House Expo at KICC.
As they exited the building, Soy and Ndebu were stopped by security officers who were checking bags. The couple questioned the security team about the bag checks, leading to their arrest.
"Currently under arrest at the KICC police station with my kids. Had attended the Homes Expo and asked why security officers were checking bags as we exited. Was told they check if we've stolen laptops," Soy tweeted.
She explained that she had paid to enter the event and had not stolen anything, but the situation escalated quickly. Ndebu also took to social media to express his frustration, stating that he had been arrested for "kudharau mkubwa" and that everyone leaving the premises was considered a suspect.
