On October 12, 2019, Eliud Kipchoge made history in Vienna, Austria, by becoming the first person to run a marathon under two hours.

With his wife and three children watching in support, Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 1:59:40, achieving his goal of breaking the two-hour barrier.

Asked about his experience, Kipchoge said, "I'm the happiest man. I'm feeling good. It's taken 65 years for a human being to make history. I have tried... It means no man is limited."

He also praised the 41 pacemakers who supported him, saying, "The first kilometres were hard. It needs perseverance. I appreciate the 41 pacemakers for volunteering to do the job. I want to tell Kenyans that anyone can step out of their cocoon."

The pacemakers ran in rotating groups, forming a V shape around Kipchoge to protect him from the wind, and were supported by an electric pace car that was programmed to complete the course in 1:59.50.
