Journalists Detained at KICC in Kenya ¶
On October 11, 2019, two BBC journalists, Anne Soy and her husband Newton Ndebu, were detained and questioned at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to reports, the couple had attended an event at the KICC and were stopped by security personnel as they were leaving the building. They were allegedly questioned about why they were being searched, and were later released after a few hours.
Anne Soy, a deputy editor for BBC Africa, took to Twitter to express her frustration and confusion over the incident. She stated that she had paid to attend the event and had not stolen anything, and was still trying to understand why she and her children were being detained.
Her husband, Newton Ndebu, also a BBC journalist, tweeted that he was 'greatly offended' by the incident and that each person leaving the building was being searched and questioned.
The couple, who were married while working at KTN, were later released after a few hours, according to Newton Ndebu's Twitter post.
