On October 12, 2019, the bodies of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu were finally retrieved from the Indian Ocean, bringing closure to their family after a 13-day operation.

The operation, which involved the Kenya Navy and private divers from South Africa, was a complex and challenging task due to the depth and location of the wreckage.

According to investigators, Mariam and Amanda were found in a tight embrace at the back seat of their car, which was in parking mode when it sank.

County Governor Joho addressed the press at Likoni ferry, urging the public to stop speculating about the cause of the accident, saying 'ajali ni ajali' (an accident is an accident).

Reactions from Kenyans on social media expressed shock, sadness, and sympathy for the family, with many speculating about the circumstances leading up to the accident.

Some users suggested that Mariam may have panicked and put the car in park as it sank, while others believed she may have tried to reverse the car but was too late.
