Kenya is fortunate to be a country that is not frequently hit by major disasters such as earthquakes or cyclones. However, this does not excuse the country's shocking incompetence in disaster response and management.

The recent Likoni ferry accident, in which a car sank with a mother and child, is a stark example of this incompetence. The accident highlights the country's inability to respond effectively to disasters, even in situations where the number of casualties is relatively low.

While the country's response to the January terrorist attack at DusitD2 Hotel in Nairobi was prompt and effective, the response to the Likoni ferry accident was woefully inadequate. The fact that the car was not recovered for 11 days is a testament to the country's lack of preparedness and response to disasters.

It is not surprising that the response was so lacklustre, considering the lack of public awareness on disaster preparedness and response. However, this is no excuse for the country's failure to respond effectively to disasters.

The Disaster Management Act established the National Disaster Management Authority, and it is now time to expedite the running of this authority to ensure a seamless and coordinated disaster management. Each county should also have its own disaster management body to ensure that responses are tailored to the specific needs of each region.

As we mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, it is essential that we aim to respond to disasters swiftly, effectively, and holistically. This includes being prepared to respond to complex disasters such as the Solai dam tragedy in Nakuru, where evacuation or excavation may be required.
