On October 12, 2019, a Silverstone Air Fokker 50 plane, registration 5Y-IZO, skidded off the runway at Nairobi's Wilson Airport shortly after take-off, carrying 55 passengers and five crew members.
The aircraft was operating the Wilson-Mombasa-Lamu-Mombasa-Wilson route, according to a statement by Silverstone Air.
President Uhuru Kenyatta commended the emergency rescue teams at Wilson Airport for their swift response, which helped prevent any fatalities. Nine people were reported to have sustained injuries.
State House spokesperson Kanze Dena said, 'His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta commends emergency rescue teams stationed at Wilson Airport in Nairobi for their swift response following an accident involving a Silverstone Air operated Fokker 50 aircraft. The President at the same time wishes quick recovery to passengers injured on the ill-fated aircraft.'
The incident is currently under investigation by civil aviation authorities, who aim to establish the cause of the mishap and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
