On October 12, 2019, the world watched as Eliud Kipchoge attempted to break the two-hour marathon barrier in Vienna, Austria. Meanwhile, in his home region of North Rift, Kenya, thousands of fans gathered to watch the historic event live.

Big screens were set up in various locations, including Oginga Odinga and Eldoret-Iten road junction, to provide live viewing of the event. Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson was among those who joined the crowds to watch Kipchoge's attempt.

Locals in Eldoret also gathered in various hotels, including the Eldoret Sports Club, Poa Place, and Klique hotel, to watch the event. In Elgeyo Marakwet, county Athletics Kenya (AK) secretary Boniface Tiren organized a live viewing event in a hotel in Kapcherop, where over 100 athletes, including 2012 Boston Marathon champion Sharon Cherop and Leonard Komon, gathered to watch the event.

“On behalf of local AK officials and coaches, I wish Kipchoge success in this challenge. We wish he breaks the sub two hour barrier and make history as the first man to run under two hours,” Tiren said.

At Kipchoge's home in Kapsisiywo, a big screen was mounted for locals to watch the event. Neighbours and fellow church members also gathered at St Peters Catholic church to pray for Kipchoge's success.

“Before the race starts on Saturday, we shall be having another mass an hour before we join other members to watch,” said Fredrick Songol, Kipchoge's uncle.
