On October 11, 2019, Kenyan journalist Anne Soy found herself in a shocking situation when she was arrested in Nairobi under unclear circumstances.

According to Soy's social media post, she was detained together with her children at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), where she had attended the Kenya Homes Expo.

“Still trying to understand why I’m under arrest with my kids,” Soy said on Twitter, leaving many wondering about the reasons behind her arrest.

As a BBC Deputy Editor and Senior Africa Correspondent, Soy works at the BBC offices in Nairobi and had attended the Expo, which brings together real estate stakeholders with potential and existing homeowners.

She claimed that security officers were searching their bags as they exited KICC, and when she asked why, she was told that attendees are checked to see if they have stolen laptops. However, no explanation was given for her arrest, and police have yet to release a statement on the matter.
