On October 11, 2019, hundreds of Kenyans gathered at the Likoni ferry channel to witness the retrieval of a vehicle that had plunged into the Indian Ocean 13 days earlier.
As the multi-agency team prepared to retrieve the vehicle, onlookers caused chaos in the ferries, refusing to alight from the vessels at the Likoni Channel.
"I cannot stay home and watch from the media or listen to what people are saying, I have to watch how the vehicle will be removed," said Faith Kwamboka, who had camped at the Likoni Channel for two days.
Security was beefed up at the channel, with a ferry official warning idlers on the ferry that they would be forcibly ejected.
"We have asked police officers to help control the crowd for us, because a slight commotion of such a huge number of people can be fatal," the official said.
The government had announced that the retrieval process would not interfere with ferry services.
