On October 11, 2019, a car was recovered from the Indian Ocean, 13 days after it was submerged during the Likoni Ferry tragedy.

The car belonged to Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

According to eyewitnesses, Mariam and Amanda were crossing from Likoni mainland to the island side from a trip to Kwale county when the tragedy occurred.

"The windscreen of the recovered car still has a sticker that read, ‘I’m a winner!’"

Another sticker on the car read, ‘My case is different, 2017.’

These stickers have been interpreted as a prophetic tale, signifying the triumph the car recovery brings for Mariam’s family.

Photos of the car also show that her car gear was set on parking position, contradicting initial allegations that the deceased reversed her car into the ocean.

A police source at the scene said Mariam had embraced her daughter Amanda at the back seat, and police had to separate them.

Here are the photos of the car recovered from the Indian Ocean, taken by Andrew Kasuku.
