Eliud Kipchoge to Attempt Historic Sub-Two Hour Marathon in Vienna

On October 12, 2019, Eliud Kipchoge, the world marathon record holder, will attempt to run a sub-two hour marathon in Vienna, Austria.

As part of his race-week preparations, Kipchoge has been training on the course in Vienna, acclimatising to the city and its climate.

Speaking at a pre-event press conference on October 10, 2019, Kipchoge expressed his confidence in making history and inspiring the world.

“Running in Berlin is running to break the world record. Running in Vienna is running to make history. It’s like the first man going to the moon,” Kipchoge said.

Deputy President William Ruto will lead Kenya’s cheering squad during the event.

The INEOS 1:59 challenge will start at 9:15am Kenyan time on October 12, 2019, and will be attended by dozens of other elite runners who will act as Kipchoge’s pacesetters.
