On October 11, 2019, a tragic incident unfolded at the Likoni channel, where a car plunged into the Indian Ocean, claiming the lives of a mother and daughter.

Thirteen days after the incident, the bodies of Mariam Kighendi and her daughter Amanda Mutheu have been retrieved, bringing closure to their families.

The recovery efforts were hindered by ocean currents, channel traffic, and scheduled docking of ships, according to Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna.

A team of divers from the Kenya Navy, Kenya Ferry Services Ltd, the Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Ports Authority, and Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, along with a South African firm of private divers from Sub Sea Services, were involved in the rescue mission.

The ill-fated car was the last to board MV Harambee ferry on September 29, 2019.

Despite the challenges, the recovery operation was successful, and the bodies can now be given the last rites of passage.
