On October 11, 2019, Moi University's main campus was indefinitely closed due to student unrest, which led to clashes with police and destruction of property.
The students had issued eight demands to the university's administrators, including a reduction in fees for supplementary exams, a redesign of the university portal, and the hiring of more lecturers.
However, the administrators failed to act on these demands, prompting the students to take to the streets and engage in running battles with the police.
As a result, the police were forced to shoot in the air and lob teargas to disperse the rowdy students, who were given up to 12pm on Friday to vacate the university's premises.
According to a notice signed by Prof N. Kimengi, the Vice-Chancellor Academics, Research and Extension, the university's Senate had decided to indefinitely suspend academic programmes at Main Campus with immediate effect.
Student leaders had declared lecture halls as 'no go zones' until their demands were met, and had also called for the sacking of the university's security chief officer and revision of the fee structure.
