On October 11, 2019, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali was the winner of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
The prize was awarded in recognition of Abiy's efforts to bring an end to the conflict with neighboring Eritrea, which had lasted for over two decades.
According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Abiy's efforts to restore relations between the two Horn of Africa nations were a key factor in the award.
Abiy's visit to Eritrea in July 2018 marked a significant turning point in the conflict, and his efforts to normalize relations between the two countries were widely recognized.
The $900,000 prize will be presented in Oslo on December 10th, 2019.
