On October 11, 2019, ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru announced the appointment of Maina Muiruri as the new chairman of the Media Council of Kenya.
Muiruri, a veteran journalist and former Managing Editor of the People Daily newspaper, accepted the high responsibility, saying: “I humbly accept the high responsibility accorded to me by the Hon. ICT Minister to chair the MCK with an able team of 8 Council Members – So help us God.”
The new board members include Stanley Mbugua Njoroge, a communication and editing consultant, Tabitha Muchemi, a former manager at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), and Tim Wanyonyi, a former Head of Content at Nation Media Group.
Other members include Roselyne Obala, a senior writer with the Standard Group Limited, Susan Karago, a lecturer at Daystar University, Patience Nyange, an Assistant Director at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, and David Mghanga Mwaisaka, a Country Senior Legal Counsel at Standard Chartered Kenya.
The appointments were made as per the provision of the Media Council Act 2013, and the new board members will serve for three years.
The appointments come after the Employment and Labour Relations Court stopped the planned recruitment of the chairperson and board members last month, following a petition by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek).
