On October 11, 2019, Deputy President William Ruto left the country with a high-powered delegation, including his wife Rachel, to Vienna, Austria, to cheer world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge as he tackled the historic INEOS 1:59 challenge.

The trip was not without controversy, as many Kenyans took to social media to express their disappointment and frustration over the use of public funds for the trip.

Paul Rukaria questioned the funding of the trip, saying, "Citizens do not pay the DP that much to undertake ad hoc cheerleader roles. We expect him to be behind his desk working on reducing the balance of payments and GOK domestic borrowing etc."

Others, like Mugo Wa Wamae, suggested that the Deputy President could have sponsored a few villagers from Kaptagat to attend the event instead.

Robert Mutunga Mwakavi reminded the Deputy President of Jubilee's broken promises, including the construction of stadiums that were supposed to be ready after 3 and 6 months.

Bowen Araab Bowen echoed Mwakavi's sentiments, wondering why the tarmac that was launched with Uhuru at Kimondi in 2016 was yet to be completed.
