On October 11, 2019, Moi University's main campus was closed indefinitely due to student unrest.

Students had engaged in running battles with police on Friday morning, prompting the university administration to order them to vacate the premises.

The closure of Moi University brings the number of higher learning institutions closed within a month to three, following the closure of Kenyatta University on October 9, 2019, and Masinde Muliro University late last month.

The students had initially issued eight demands, including the hiring of more lecturers, reduction of fees for supplementary exams, and the sacking of the university's chief security officer.

However, the university administration ordered the students to vacate the premises with immediate effect, citing the need for calm and order.

According to an internal memo signed by DVC Prof. I. N. Kimengi, all students at the main campus were directed to vacate the hostels and university premises by noon on Friday, October 11, 2019.
