On Thursday, a devastating incident occurred at Kivaruri village in the Kanja area of Embu East, where a woman picking tea was attacked and killed by a swarm of bees.
Rosemary Wanja, a middle-aged woman, unknowingly stepped on a swarm of bees that had nested on the base of a tea bush. Her screams for help were heard by her neighbors, who attempted to rescue her but were thwarted by the aggressive bees.
According to Antony Njagi, Wanja's nephew and a rescuer, the bees were too numerous and violent, making it difficult for them to reach Wanja in time. "We responded immediately we heard her screams, but it took us time to get to where she was. The bees were too many and violent and they thwarted our quick efforts. We had to wrap a blanket on some people to counter the bees," Njagi said.
Wanja was rushed to Runyenjes Sub-county Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Scores of villagers who tried to help were also left with bee stings, with many expressing shock at the unusual occurrence.
