Rwanda has taken in a second group of African refugees from Libya, with 123 migrants arriving in the country on Thursday night.
The refugees, who are part of a larger group of 500 African migrants that Rwanda agreed to host under an agreement with the UNHCR and the African Union, will join another 66 refugees who arrived in Kigali last month.
According to the Rwanda Ministry of Emergency, the new arrivals are mostly young people, with 24 women and three minors among them. They will be housed at the Gashora Refugees Transit Centre in Bugesera District, eastern Rwanda.
President Paul Kagame has said that Rwanda's decision to host African refugees is motivated by a desire to provide 'decent alternatives' for Africans. 'We don't give too much because we don't have too much, but whatever we have, we share and we live decent lives,' he said.
The refugees will have the option to eventually resettle in a third country, return to their country of origin, or become Rwandan citizens.
UNHCR Rwanda has thanked the government of Rwanda and the Rwandan people for their generosity in hosting the refugees.
