October 11, 2019, many people know someone who has cancer or have been directly affected by it. Visiting a cancer patient can be a challenging experience, and choosing the right words to say can be difficult.

When interacting with a cancer patient, it's essential to be mindful of the words we choose. Some statements can come off as insensitive or demoralizing, making the patient feel worse.

One common mistake is telling a cancer patient that they 'look great' or 'don't look sick.' This statement can be uncomfortable for the patient, who may be feeling vulnerable and unsure of their appearance.

Another mistake is telling stories of cancer patients you know or have known and what happened to them. While it's natural to try to make a connection, each person's experience with cancer is unique, and sharing stories can demoralize the patient and make them lose hope in their treatment.

Additionally, making comments about a patient's appearance, such as 'I have never liked big breasts,' can be hurtful and insensitive. Patients who have undergone a mastectomy or double mastectomy have done so to save their lives, and discussing their appearance can make them feel like a lesser person.

Finally, telling a cancer patient that 'everything happens for a season and for a reason' or that 'God does not give people what they cannot handle' can be hurtful and test the patient's faith. These statements can sow a seed of doubt in the patient's mind and make them feel like their condition is not being taken seriously.

It's essential to be mindful of the words we choose when interacting with a cancer patient. Avoid making blanket statements, such as 'you will be fine,' which can make the patient feel like their condition is not being taken seriously. Instead, focus on offering support and being present for the patient.
