With over 20 years of experience in electrical engineering, Almaz has held senior roles in strategic innovation, operations management, and project management in Kenya and the US. She is currently the head of maintenance and support services at the University of Nairobi and also serves as an advisor to the Ministry of Information and Communication.

Almaz's journey into the technical world was an accident, but one that has opened many doors for her. She initially intended to study food science and technology but was admitted to the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology instead.

She pursued a Master's and PhD degree to prove herself in a male-dominated field and to stay competitive in the job market. Almaz emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, stating that technology is constantly changing, and one must keep expanding their knowledge and developing their skills.

When asked about the biggest challenge facing students who want to pursue computer science and electrical engineering courses, Almaz notes that many students are deterred by the perceived difficulty of these courses. However, she stresses that the benefits of pursuing STEM courses far outweigh the challenges, especially for women.

As a mentor, Almaz faces the challenge of keeping her mentees focused on their goals. She believes that employed professionals should pursue further education to stay competitive in the job market and to have the necessary qualifications to start a business.

Almaz's fondest memories of studying in a foreign country are of interacting with students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. She learned a lot and made lifelong friends during her time at the University of California, Berkeley.

Almaz credits her mentors, Prof. Timothy Waema and Dr. Agnes Wausi, for their guidance and support throughout her career. She emphasizes the importance of picking the right kind of friends and mentors who share your values and desire to succeed.
