On the eve of the International Day of the Girl Child, October 11, 2019, the County of Kilifi launched a campaign to prevent teenage pregnancies and early marriages, sparking hope among civil society organizations.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Kenya Forum and the Federation of Women Lawyers - Kenya (Fida-Kenya) welcomed the initiative, launched by Governor Amason Kingi, and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts from stakeholders.
According to Catherine Nyambura, the SDGs Kenya Forum's Gender and Advocacy head, the inclusion of civil society, grassroots representatives, the county assembly, and the executive could make the campaign successful.
The campaign aims to enhance reproductive health services and encourage teenage mothers to return to school. Last year, the county recorded 17,000 child pregnancies, prompting Governor Kingi to form a task force to address the issue.
