On Thursday, a devastating gold mining shaft collapse in Nango area, Bondo, Siaya County, claimed the lives of three young men.

Among the victims were 23-year-old Nicholas Adera, a Form Four student at Uyawi Secondary School, and 21-year-old Kevin Ochieng Juma, who was a student at Egerton University. David Ochieng', a fellow student, also lost his life in the tragic incident.

The three were on a mining expedition at around 3am when the eight-meter-deep shaft caved in, burying them under debris.

According to Bondo Sub-county Police Commander Anthony Wafula, the victims succumbed to their injuries after being retrieved from the mine by their colleagues.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Bondo Sub-county Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Following the incident, the sub-county police commander announced a ban on all gold mining activities during the night to prevent similar tragedies.
