On Thursday, October 10, 2019, a team of eight divers attempted to retrieve a car that had sunk in the Indian Ocean after it slipped off the MV Harambee ferry on the Likoni Channel.

However, the operation was suspended due to darkness, with the multiagency team citing this as one of the reasons for the delay.

The car had sunk with two occupants, a mother and her daughter, late last month.

Government spokesman Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna had expressed optimism earlier in the day that the retrieval exercise would be completed by close of business on Thursday.

The operation was initially delayed due to strong underwater currents, and the multiagency team is not 100 percent certain that the bodies of the mother and her daughter are still trapped in the car.
