Published on October 10, 2019, Simon Sinek, author of the influential book Start With Why, emphasizes the importance of inspiring human behavior over manipulation. According to Sinek, there are only two ways to influence people: by inspiring them or by manipulating them.

Most individuals and organizations rely heavily on manipulation to influence others, often using tactics like threats, bonuses, or price drops to achieve their goals. However, Sinek argues that this approach is less effective in building lasting relationships and has led to the downfall of many businesses.

“Knowing you have a loyal customer and employee base not only reduces cost, it provides peace of mind. Like loyal friends, you know your customers and employees will be there for you when you need them most,” Sinek says.

For a company to attract a loyal following, Sinek stresses the need to inspire action rather than manipulate people. This requires clearly understanding and articulating the WHY behind an organization's existence, its purpose, cause, or belief.

“What is your purpose, cause or belief? Why does your company exist? Why do you wake up every day? Why should anyone care?” Sinek asks.

He notes that when companies lack a clear understanding of why their customers are loyal, they often resort to a disproportionate number of manipulations to achieve their goals.
