Kenya's Moi Day: A Holiday Honoring Daniel Arap Moi

October 10th marks Moi Day, a public holiday in Kenya honoring the country's second president, Daniel Arap Moi. Moi served as president from 1978 to 2002.

Although Moi Day was initially removed from the public holiday list after the 2010 Constitution, the High Court later ruled in favor of reinstating the holiday. On November 8, 2017, Justice George Odunga declared that the omission of Moi Day as a public holiday was an illegality and contravened Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act.

As Kenyans celebrated Moi Day on October 10, 2019, many took to Twitter to share their memories and reflections on Moi's leadership. Donald Kipkorir noted, 'On this beautiful Moi Day, I remember with nostalgia my President, President Daniel Arap Moi … Some may want to remember the negatives but I choose to remember his positives knowing we all are human and we all have our foibles … Unlike many of his age, Moi handed over power.'

Others, like Gideon Kitheka, reflected on Moi's legacy, stating, 'Moi was the Darling of all people and we shall forever miss him and his leadership.'
