On Wednesday, October 9, 2019, a routine fishing trip turned disastrous for a group of fishermen off the coast of Watamu Beach in Kilifi county.
Strong winds capsized their boat, leaving two fishermen to swim to safety while their companions struggled to stay afloat.
One of the twins was rescued after a two-hour ordeal and rushed to Malindi Subcounty Hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The body of the other twin was recovered at 5 pm, and funeral preparations are underway.
Malindi Subcounty Police Commander Philip Wambugu has urged fishermen to exercise caution and study tides before embarking on sea voyages.
“Many experienced fishermen have been caught off guard by the unpredictable nature of the sea, and they should not take precautions for granted,” he cautioned.
