On October 10, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested seven individuals suspected of being part of a notorious M-Pesa fraud ring known as the 'Mulot Team'.
The group, which operates in Kiambu County, is accused of engaging in illegal sim and M-Pesa float swap, as well as sending fake M-Pesa messages to unsuspecting individuals, claiming to have sent cash to the wrong number.
The seven suspects, aged between 21 and 28, were arrested in two separate houses in Kabete, Kiambu County, where over 200 sim cards, numerous mobile phones, and M-Pesa registers were seized.
According to police, further investigations are ongoing in the case.
Notably, in March 2018, three individuals were separately charged in an Eldoret court for stealing over Sh100, 000 from M-Pesa accounts of unsuspecting individuals. One of the accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a one-year imprisonment.
