Published on October 10, 2019, the government has announced that the retrieval of a car that plunged into the Likoni ferry channel last Sunday will be delayed.

Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna stated that the process to remove the wreck from the seabed has been hampered by strong currents that pose a high risk to divers.

Two ships at deep sea, awaiting to dock at the port of Mombasa, have also contributed to the delay as they pass on the surface where the car had been sighted.

Mr. Oguna had initially announced that the retrieval process would start at 9am, but due to the strong currents and the presence of commuters, the operation has been put on hold.

He emphasized that the government does not want to interfere with the daily commute at the channel, where thousands of commuters use the ferry to move from the island.

Mr. Oguna also warned against taking close-up photos of the wreck once it is removed, stating that the family of the deceased needs respect during this difficult time.

The families of Marian Kighenda and her daughter who perished in the tragedy are still undergoing counseling.
