On October 10, 2019, a multi-agency team announced that they had located the vehicle, which was carrying Ms Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, after 10 days of searching.

The vehicle was found 58 metres deep in the ocean, and video footage obtained by the Nation showed two tyres of the vehicle lying upside down, with its windows locked, and a human hand visible from one of the car windows.

According to Kenya Ferry Service (KFS) officials, the vehicle drifted 40 metres away from where it had plunged into the ocean.

Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna announced that efforts to retrieve the vehicle would begin on Thursday, October 10, 2019, at 9am.
