On October 10, 2019, a devastating incident occurred at the Kenyan coast, claiming the lives of two Tanzanian fishermen.

The fishermen, brothers Nasoor Hamad Said and Said Hamad Said, were on a fishing expedition in the Indian Ocean when their boat capsized due to heavy tides caused by a storm at the Watamu creek.

According to Hosman Mwambire, chairman of the Watamu Beach Management Unit, local fishermen rescued two other fishermen in the Wednesday morning incident.

Mr. Mwambire expressed regret over the incident, stating that had authorities been quick to respond and the BMU had rescue equipment, the deaths could have been avoided.

He lamented the lack of rescue equipment, despite five members of his team having undergone a rescue training course, and had to risk their lives using shaky boats to assist their colleagues.

The two brothers were buried at the Watamu Muslim cemetery according to Muslim religious practice and tradition.
