Published on October 10, 2019, a 37-year-old man from Matayos in Busia County tragically lost his life after winning a chang'aa-drinking competition.
Michael Ouma, a resident of Matayos, emerged first in the competition, but his victory came at a great cost – the loss of his life.
According to eyewitnesses, Ouma drank three glasses of chang'aa in quick succession, one glass after the other, without stopping.
His mother, Jackline Nabwire, revealed that her son had a drinking problem and had left home on Wednesday morning to meet his friends at one of the drinking dens in Matayos.
Two of Ouma's drinking buddies were rushed to hospital but are currently recovering.
Doctors suspect that Ouma succumbed to dehydration, and an autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
His body was taken to Sega Mission Hospital Mortuary.
