This archive report was first published on 10 October 2019.

On April 4, 2019, Constable Lukas Gitau, a neighbour of the victim Caroline Chesire, received a disturbing call from his wife. She informed him that Joseph Kairu, a prison warder, had visited their home two days after Chesire's disappearance, claiming he had been sent by Chesire to break into her house and retrieve some crucial documents.

Gitau testified before Justice Rachel Ng'etich that he warned Kairu not to engage his wife in any suspicious activities, but Kairu apologized for the incident. However, Gitau later discovered that Chesire had been abducted and killed.

Another witness, Marion Chelimo, a fellow warder, testified that Kairu visited her home on April 3, 2019, at 10 pm, appearing tensed, panicky, and sweating. He claimed to have found his lover sleeping with another man after a business trip in Nyahururu.

On May 13, 2019, Joseph Kairu and Raymond Kiplimo, another prison warder, were escorted by police officers outside Nakuru court, facing charges for Chesire's murder.
