On October 10, 2019, a dramatic turn of events unfolded in Taita Taveta County as Governor Granton Samboja faced impeachment proceedings.
Thirty out of the 33 members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favor of the impeachment motion, tabled by Rong’e Ward Representative Harris Keke. The remaining three MCAs were absent.
The MCAs accused Governor Samboja of several serious offenses, including failing to submit an annual report on the implementation status of county policies and plans, and misappropriating funds.
Furthermore, the MCAs alleged that Governor Samboja had misled residents of Taita Taveta by launching a campaign to dissolve the county government in July 2019, citing the need for fresh elections.
During a press briefing at the time, Governor Samboja had stated, "I think the best gift we can give to the people of Taita Taveta is to go back to elections so that we’re chosen afresh. For those who will be re-elected, we will thank God; and to those who will not come back, we will also thank God. Because the Bible says we must give gratitude to God in all issues."
