On October 9, 2019, a glimmer of hope emerged in the search for a Kenyan woman and her daughter who went missing after their car plunged into the Indian Ocean.
Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna announced that Kenya Navy divers had spotted what is believed to be the car, but cautioned that they could not confirm whether it was the one that sank with the two on board.
"What we can confirm is that we have sighted a car but we cannot ascertain whether it is the one that sunk with the two since we have not checked the number plate," Oguna said.
The car was spotted 58 meters deep using technological equipment hired by the government through a private company.
"For now we cannot specify on the time that it will take to retrieve the car from the ocean, but we will eventually get it out," Oguna added.
The car had reversed from a ferry midstream and submerged into the sea with 35-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu on board.
