After 11 days of searching, a multi-agency team has located and positively identified the car that plunged into the Indian Ocean with a woman and her daughter on board.
According to Government Spokesman Rtd Col Cyrus Oguna, the vehicle with registration number KCB 289c has been confirmed as the one that plunged into the ocean, but the authorities are yet to confirm if the car still has occupants inside.
"We can confirm to all Kenyans that the car inside the ocean is the one that plunged, but we cannot confirm if the bodies are inside we will only do that tomorrow after retrieving it," Oguna said in a briefing.
Earlier, a close family source had informed Standard Digital that authorities had seen three bodies in the car, but this has not been officially confirmed.
The retrieval operation is set to conclude tomorrow, with the government spokesman indicating that a crane will be used to winch and pull the vehicle from the seabed.
The family members of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu received the news with joy, as their hope of retrieving the bodies of their loved ones became imminent.
