On October 9, 2019, government spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna confirmed that the vehicle had been located.
The car, which had been missing for 11 days, was identified by its number plate, KCB 289C, as the one that sank on September 29, 2019, killing 35-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu.
Col. Oguna explained that the number plate was confirmed through CCTV footage and technological equipment hired by the government.
Kenya Navy divers were set to retrieve the car from the ocean floor on Thursday morning, after which it would be confirmed whether the bodies were still inside.
However, Col. Oguna was unable to specify the duration it would take to retrieve the car.
