On Tuesday night, detectives in Machakos apprehended three police officers and two prison warders suspected of collaborating to steal from a KCB ATM in Machakos town.
According to the police, the incident occurred at around 11:30 pm when a nightguard attached to the bank's branch in Machakos town alerted security officers after seeing suspicious-looking individuals at the ATM lobby.
Police immediately swung into action, raiding the scene and apprehending five men who are currently being held for questioning at Machakos Police Station.
The arrested individuals include Cpl Richard Wambua, Apc Boniface Wambua, Apc Cyprian Odundo, Prison warder Julius Mwalili, and Prison Warder Musyoki Mutua.
During the arrest, Sh268,000 in hard cash was recovered, with Sh100,000 found in the vehicle's dashboard and another Sh168,000 stashed in one of the arrested officer's pair of socks.
Machakos County Police Commander, John Karanja, confirmed the incident but stated that investigations were still ongoing to establish the facts.
“We are yet to arrive at any conclusion as of now because we want to get proper facts on the incident. We will furnish you with the accurate reports once we complete ongoing investigations,” Karanja said.
