On October 9, 2019, a glimmer of hope emerged in the search for a woman and her four-year-old daughter who went missing in the Likoni ferry channel 11 days prior.
According to Col. Cyrus Oguna, the government spokesperson, Kenya Navy divers had sighted a car in the channel using technological equipment hired by the government.
The car was spotted 58 meters deep, and while Col. Oguna could not confirm whether it was the vehicle that sunk with the two, he stated that rescuers hoped it was the one they had been searching for.
“What we can confirm is that we have sighted a car but we cannot ascertain whether it is the one that sunk with the two since we have not checked the number plate,” Col. Oguna said.
He further stated that the car would need to be retrieved from the ocean floor to confirm its identity.
Col. Oguna also noted that they could not immediately confirm whether there were any bodies in the said car.
For now, the search operation continues, with the government working to retrieve the car and determine its connection to the tragic incident.
