On October 9, 2019, Ugandan politician Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, narrowly escaped a police siege at his home in Kampala.
Earlier that day, Bobi Wine had taken to Twitter to express his concerns about the Ugandan police and military surrounding his home, allegedly to prevent him from hosting an Independence Day concert.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, an amateur video shared by NTV Uganda on Facebook showed Bobi Wine jumping onto a moving motorbike and speeding off amidst cheers.
According to Joel Senyonyi, a confidant of Bobi Wine, the musician managed to leave his home, and the police should have left the premises as the person they were guarding was no longer there.
However, the police spokesperson denied that Bobi Wine had escaped, claiming that the musician left his home and the police were monitoring his movements.
As the country prepares for the 2021 general elections, Bobi Wine is seen as President Yoweri Museveni's biggest threat, with analysts suggesting that the move to bar him from holding music concerts is aimed at crippling him financially.
