On October 9, 2019, a significant development emerged in the Likoni Ferry Channel tragedy, where a car carrying Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu plunged into the water on September 29.

Divers have successfully located three cars, including the ill-fated Toyota ISIS, which is believed to be the vehicle that sank into the channel ten days ago.

Government spokesperson Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna confirmed that the operation to recover the body is now at 90 per cent complete, with only 10 per cent remaining.

However, Oguna emphasized the need to confirm the number plate of the vehicle to ascertain if indeed it is the one that sunk into the channel on September 29.

Family spokesperson Luka Mbati expressed hope but declined to comment until they see the bodies.

“What is remaining is about 10 per cent. We need to confirm the number plate of that vehicle to ascertain if indeed it is the one that sunk into the channel on September 29,” said Oguna.

“Yes we do have hope, but we won’t talk until we see the bodies,” Mbati said.
