On October 9, 2019, a High Court in Kenya is set to play a video recording that explains the execution of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda, and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri.
The video was recorded by Joseph Muindi, a senior officer who was tasked with capturing former police informer Peter Ngugi as he took a detective to the spots where the three were killed on the night of June 23, 2016.
According to the court, the recording was made after Mr. Ngugi agreed to go ahead and be recorded, despite being cautioned and read his rights.
During the recording, Mr. Ngugi explained how he, along with police officers Leonard Mwangi and Fredrick Leliman, and another man identified as Kamenju, killed the three victims.
Mr. Ngugi stated that the group had argued for about three hours over the fate of the victims, with some members wanting them freed and others wanting them eliminated.
After reaching a consensus, the victims were executed, with Mr. Mwenda being the first to be killed, followed by Mr. Kimani, and then Mr. Muiruri.
The bodies were then stashed in gunny bags and driven to Ol Donyo Sabuk in Machakos County, where they were thrown into Athi River.
