On Tuesday, Makueni ward representatives joined county assemblies in rejecting the Punguza Mizigo bill in a heated session.

The local leaders expressed concerns over the 'good intentions' of Dr Ekuru Aukot, who is behind the constitutional review initiative, citing that his proposed solution to Kenya's burdens was unrealistic and that he had not consulted widely.

Alfred Mutuku, Nguumo Ward Rep and chair of an ad hoc committee tasked by the Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu, moved the motion to reject the bill.

The committee noted that reducing the number of elected and nominated leaders as suggested in the bill would disadvantage marginalised groups.

Assembly Majority leader Kyalo Mumo seconded the motion, expressing his concerns over Dr Aukot's proposal for a one-year, seven-term presidency, calling it 'undemocratic.'

While most lawmakers praised Dr Aukot for being visionary, they also emphasized the need for wider consultation.

Thange MCA Nicholas Maitha likened Dr Aukot to American's Martin Luther King and India's Mahatma Ghadhi, whose great visions for their countries took long to materialize.
