On October 9, 2019, Safaricom, Kenya's largest telco by customer numbers, unveiled a new logo for Mpesa in honour of Eliud Kipchoge.
The new logo, christened Eliud 159, pays homage to Kipchoge's historic marathon achievements.
According to Safaricom, the change is a show of commitment and respect to their icon, Eliud Kipchoge, who is set to attempt to break the two-hour marathon barrier during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge.
As of 2007, Mpesa has grown to serve 22.6 million active customers through a network of 167,000 M-pesa agents countrywide.
"To show our commitment and respect to our icon @EliudKipchoge, we will be changing our M-PESA brand for the next 7 days. Our new logo will be the five letters spelling Kipchoge’s first name, “Eliud” and the numbers “1:59” to denote the challenge. #Eliud159 pic.twitter.com/GtZRHrrRBV ">— Safaricom PLC (@SafaricomPLC) October 9, 2019
