On October 9, 2019, Kenya's largest mobile network operator, Safaricom, unveiled a temporary change to its M-Pesa logo in honor of marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge.
The logo change, which will last for seven days, is a gesture of loyalty and affinity to Kipchoge as he prepares to attempt to run 42 kilometers in under two hours in Vienna, Austria.
Speaking at the unveiling in Nairobi, Safaricom's acting CEO Michael Joseph said, "In honour of this attempt [INEOS 1:59 Challenge] we will change our MPesa logo for the next seven days to show our loyalty and affinity to him and also to wish him well."
The INEOS 1:59 Challenge, sponsored by British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is set to take place on October 12, 2019, in Vienna, Austria, pending weather conditions and Kipchoge's readiness.
As part of the celebration, Safaricom will also provide free YouTube live streaming of the challenge.
