On a day when Kenya's football team, Harambee Starlets, should have been celebrating their Olympic dreams, they were instead fighting for their financial survival. Despite being broke, they managed to edge out Ghana in a tightly contested game at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, winning 1-0 in extra time.
Genitrix Shikangwa scored the all-important goal in the 99th minute from the penalty spot, capitalizing on a mistake by Juliet Acheampong who handled a goal-bound header in the box.
This victory also translates to an aggregate score, as the two teams had settled for a barren draw in the first leg match of this competition played in Accra on Friday.
Starlets' impressive result comes despite the team not receiving any funding from the government, as required by law. The Ministry of Sports has not funded the team this year, with players owed training allowances dating back to last year.
Kenya will likely face Zambia in the penultimate stage of the competition, having beaten Malawi 5-3 on aggregate in the previous round.
