Uganda police have cancelled a concert by Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, scheduled for October 9, coinciding with the country's Independence Day celebrations.
The cancellation was announced in a letter dated October 2, released to Kampala Metropolitan Police, signed by Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola.
According to the letter, Bobi Wine's concert plans had 'remarkable deficiencies' that did not guarantee 'lawfulness, safety, security for the public and organisers.'
Police Spokesman Patrick Onyango explained that officers would be unable to provide adequate security as they would be deployed to other authorised venues for the Independence Day celebrations.
Bobi Wine, a musician turned politician, had scheduled a music show 'Osobola' for October 9, but he claimed not to have received any letter from the police and vowed to proceed with the concert as planned.
This is not the first time Bobi Wine's concerts have been cancelled. In April 2019, police stopped another concert on grounds that he had not followed procedure, resulting in the use of force to foil the concert plans.
Since joining politics as Kyadondo East MP in May 2017, more than 125 music concerts for Bobi Wine have been cancelled.
