On July 31st this year, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a memo to all police stations in the country to impound high-end cars suspected to be either stolen or illegally registered.

According to the memo, the DCI is targeting 444 luxury cars, including 64 Range Rovers, 94 Mercedes Benz, 1 Porsche, and various Toyotas, Nissans, Volkswagens, Subarus, and two Volvos.

The vehicles are suspected to have been fraudulently registered and are therefore uncustomed since taxes in their regard have not been paid, said Peter Kiboro, the DCI KRA unit.

Among the first 18 cars impounded was Raila Odinga's Range Rover registration KCS 002D, while Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa's Range Rover flagged by the taxman in 2016 is also being sought.

Additionally, a Range Rover owned by Steve Mbogo that was found to be using registration details KCL 830A shared by a Probox is under investigation.

Out of the 444 targeted cars, 64 are Range Rovers, 94 Mercedes Benz, 1 Porsche, and the rest are Toyotas, Nissans, Volkswagens, Subarus, and two Volvos.

The vehicles are said to be entering the country in transit to neighbouring countries but end up in Nairobi and other towns thereby denying the taxman millions in unpaid duty.
