On October 9, 2019, Egypt national team head coach Hossam El-Badry made a significant announcement, naming Al Ahly's right-back Ahmed Fathi as the Pharaohs' new captain.

El-Badry had already released his 23-man squad for their friendly against Botswana in the international break next week, and Fathi's return to the team came as a surprise.

With this new appointment, Fathi will lead the team in their upcoming match against Botswana.
