On October 8, 2019, a High Court in Kenya was set to play a video recording of the execution of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda, and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri.

The video was made by Joseph Muindi, a senior police officer, who was tasked with capturing former police informer Peter Ngugi as he took a detective to the spots where the three were killed on the night of June 23, 2016.

Ngugi had been hired by police officer Fredrick Leliman to help him carry out the job, which involved killing Mwenda, who had filed a complaint against Leliman.

According to the confession made by Ngugi, the killers disagreed about the fate of the victims and argued for about three hours before deciding to execute them.

The victims were killed in a field in Mlolongo, with Mwenda being the first to be killed, followed by Kimani and Muiruri.

The bodies were then stashed in gunny bags and driven to Ol Donyo Sabuk in Machakos County, where they were thrown into Athi River.

The spot was chosen by Kamenju, a co-accused, who had previously worked at Ol Donyo Sabuk Police Post.

The three bodies were retrieved from the river a week later.
